Not bad for the price. Not bad at all. So I bought two of these.

Reviewed in India on 19 May 2018

Verified Purchase

To the point, I try to buy only smart routers.

I'm currently using a Linksys EA6500 AC1750 (₹14000) smart Dual band gigabit Router as a primary modem router for my ACT Fibernet connection. Then I had cat 6 cables run around the house. Other end needed a good gigabit router with a good enough range. I was using a Netgear R6220 AC1200 smart gigabit router (₹3400) which was okay buy not all that good.

With Netgear & D-Link (threw away all my D-Link products) , I had issues especially with unstable WIFI connection. And what really lacked was control on these other routers (all similarly priced) they just seemed restricted and dumbed down.

Then I stumbled on to this Asus RT-AC58U. It had all the requirements I wanted, like WRT, print server & of course VPN.

PROS:

-Decent build quality

-Very good performance (consistent data speeds)

-MU-MIMO support (very stable wireless connection)

-Good 2.4Ghz Range & 5GHz Coverage

-Wave-2 802.11ac support

-USB 3.0 with Print server, 4g dongle support & file server

-VPN client & server support. (Darn important)

CONS:

-Only one USB port ( too bad that it's only one)

-Changes in settings will take time and restart the router (super slow reboot)

-No AiMesh feature (will buy the RT-AC86U soon)

Only after Linksys's most beautiful interface, The Asus WRT GUI is also a delight to work with, and it's just like my ASUS prime b250 motherboard's UEFI seen on them, the layout, the feel, its top notch.

Coming to VPN, it supports both VPN client & Server setup with PPTP, L2TP & OpenVPN Support. I personally have a CyberGhost Premium subscription & had no problem setting up an OpenVPN client in this router. After setup, activate and u can forget about it, as the VPN automatically reconnects after a restart. With VPN, the connection speeds usually drop a lot but luckily ain't my problem, I experienced stable & decent data speeds with pings less than <50ms which was truly impressive. I even tried with my other paid VPN subscriptions like Keepsolid's VPN Unlimited, ivacy Premium & Tiger VPN.

Out of these, CyberGhost VPN was the only better performing client & it's very safe , doesn't keep logs, has malware protection & ad blocker feature and it's out of the 5 eyes, 9 eyes & 14 eyes countries list.

For the asking price of ₹4300, the ASUS RT-AC58U Wi-Fi Router offers a great deal. It's the perfect stepping stone between budget and powerhouse, just keep in mind this is a router only, and won't perform any miracle to a weaker Internet connection.

Typical impressive ASUS performance, sleek visuals and pleasant UI. Stable connection & transfer speeds.

One useful tip for you is to immediately update the firmware to Version 3.0.0.4.380.8228 that's released on April 2018. Will fix the problems what others mentioned in their negative feedbacks.

Here's a list of fixes that are there in the new firmware,

- Fixed information disclosure vulnerability.

- Fixed CVE-2018-5721 Stack-base buffer overflow vulnerability

- Fixed CVE-2018-8826 remote code code execution vulnerability.

- Fixed CVE-2018-5999 HTTP authorization bypass and CVE-2018-6000. An independent security researcher has reported this vulnerability to Beyond Security’s SecuriTeam Secure Disclosure program

- Fixed remote code execution vulnerability.

- Fixed CVE-2017-14491: DNS - 2 byte heap based overflow

- Fixed CVE-2017-14492: DHCP - heap based overflow

- Fixed CVE-2017-14493: DHCP - stack based overflow

- Fixed CVE-2017-14494: DHCP - info leak

- Fixed CVE-2017-14495: DNS - OOM DoS

- Fixed CVE-2017-14496: DNS - DoS Integer underflow

- Fixed CVE-2017-13704: Bug collision

June update-

I've replaced the Linksys router with the better performing Asus 88U router. Upgraded my intranet wiring with CAT6E for a 1Gbps intranet

September 2018 update:

My Asus 88U has been an amazing router, I've purchased a second AC58U router for my office network with no performance hiccups. Best thing is that I can manage all my Asus routers at once with the intuitive Asus app.

 Superb Performance, Superb Value !

Ok guys this is a real world review.

The first thing i did once i started the router was update the firmware to the latest version. The router automatically gave an option to do this. Infact it even auto detected the lan subnet and suggested to switch to 192.168.2.1 from 192.168.1.1 which my modem was on.

Details:

My Router: Asus RT-AC58U AC1300 Dual Band Gigabit Wireless Router

My Modem: Asianet FTTH ont (Hathway) in unbridged mode with wifi-off.

(might be faster in bridged mode, but my isp requires mac binding, so waiting for isp to do that)

My Internet Plan: Asianet 899 - 200Mbps FTTH

Location: Ernakulam/Cochin

Tested on Wifi-Radio - 5Ghz band

Tested on Device - OnePlus 5 Mobile

Tested App - Speedtest by Ookla

Tested Server - Alliance Broadband Ernakulam (Both Tests on this server)

Tested Wifi speed before router: 45Mbps avg to 80Mbps maximum ping 23-45ms.

Tested Wifi speed after router: 190+Mbps to 205Mbps maximum upload and download almost always. ping :2-3ms.

The range is easily 20-30% better than my previous wifi.

The speed instantly started at 200Mbps unlike on the old router where the speed increased slowly to 80mbps.

ISP/Modem DNS:

Asianet Third DNS (fastest) chose 1 fastest server from isp.

8.8.4.4

1.0.0.1

Asus router DHCP DNS:

192.168.2.1

And to top it off, Asus has one of the best Firmwares with one of the best DHCP management systems, which is one of the main reasons i wanted to opt for Asus routers.

I did not have any drop issues or signal quality issues unlike what i saw on some reviews here. Guess i was lucky maybe and hopefully remains so :)

So yeah, This is probably the best AC router in the market for this value. (Performance+Value for money)

Cheers !

Pros:

1. It's been 2 days since purchased.

2. Lan Speed - Awesome

3. Wifi Stability - Very good

4. Range of 5Ghz & 2.4 better than other routers

5. WiFi Speed - Good.

6. Onboard and Setup - Easy

7. Features - Yet to explore all. As of now configured connected my 1TB HDD as Media Server. Parental Control and VPN yet to try.

8. UI - UEFI BIOS feel

CONS:

1. USB Storage - First time if you connect a HDD, it scans the entire drive slowly for media files and the same appear in devices slowly. It took few Hrs for less than 1TB Data.

2. Applying Changes - Applying changes will reboot or take a min.

3. Reboot and reconnect delayed - After couple of reboot.. hesitant to reboot.

4. FTP Config - FTP Config is not easy as expected.

5. Firmware Upgrade fails.

6. App could've been better.

These cons are liveable. I was Seeking Speed, Range and Stability. This was a perfect choice for my Act 250 Mbps.

In Lan I get 250 MBPS

In WiFi 2.4 - 60 & 5 - 80 MBPS (After crossing Concrete walls and a Door)

Seller: OnlineKing. Price is couple of hundreds more than others. But went for their review and never disappointed. Packing and time taken to deliver was impressive.

 Not ready for prime-time

Reviewed in the United States on 7 March 2019

Size name: AX11000 (802.11ax)Verified Purchase

First off I've been doing networking for 30 years. I have 7 routers deployed in my home, so I know a bit about this topic. I moved from a 5300 which was performing fine (in a large mesh setup), but since I have over 100 clients connecting to the main router, as well as wifi 6 devices, I thought I would trade the 5300 for the AX11000, mistake.

I have been experiencing random reboots, and dropped wireless clients (ALL wireless clients) on the AX11000. I have tons of IoT clients, so I can't just upgrade them, but even more "normal" clients like phones, laptops, etc. get dropped.

So working with tech support, they tell me its a hardware problem (it's not). So I force them to escalate to engineering. Then, I get this crazy instruction sheet on how to back level my router and basically turn OFF all my new functionality (this instruction sheet is based on the 5300, so it basically doesn't help and shows they don't know how to actually fix the problem, since it doesn't apply to this actual router).

They tell me to turn off AC and AX, they tell me to turn off MIMO. Ridiculous, I would have been better off with a working 5300, and saved $450, along with about 12 hours of trouble-shooting.

My advice is to wait for a firmware upgrade (the only firmware availble is the original code from Nov). Also, check snb forums, this is a common issue with this router. Asus released this product too soon.

Update. I have backlevled the device as recommened by support, as I had to make a choice between feeding my animals and having wifi6 connections. So with wifi6, mu-mimo, and beamforming disabled, I can connect things reliably. Of course, this has now turned into a 5 year old router that is worth about $100 instead of a new router that cost me $450, but at least it works about half as well as the router it placed (I just don't want to spend hours undoing what I have done).

Update 4/1/19 - Asus released a firmware update for this router. I can now get Wifi6 connections, and at the same time, it allows for legacy suport. This required a full factory reset of all nodes. Unfortunately, however, I am still experiencing random connectivty resets. Now, instead of just wireless, it is dropping even wired connections. This is on all nodes. So, this router is still not ready for prime-time, rating unchanged.

Update 4/30- Stability has increased. It still has some hiccups, the transition from a 6 to 5 connection is not great, but overall it is usable. Updating my review from 1 to 4 at this time. I'm hopeful we get back up to 5 soon

Bought this to replace my Virgin Hub 3 and it has improved my internet no end!

Does it extend the distance of your wifi? Yes but not by as much as you would hope it would.

Does it improve the signal? Yes but again don't expect miracles

Does it improve internet speeds? Yes but again don't expect miracles

Does it fix a lot of the issues Virgin Media users experience, like ports being locked and certain devices not being able to connect etc? Oh yes! Ring! doorbell now works a treat!

I was using the Virgin Hub for the last four years mainly due to laziness, I couldn't be bothered to change it and it worked for what I need it for.

I found however that certain rooms in my house struggled to get internet and certain devices struggled to connect or stay connected.

My laziness was suddenly called into question however when I purchased a Ring! doorbell! Whilst this worked on my hub, it was patchy at best and a lot of the features just wouldn't work! I did some investigation and found a lot of other people were complaining about the Hub for the same reason!

I decided to bite the bullet and get a new router, and I plumped for this due to it's sleak design (it's in my front room cabinet so has to at least look good!) and due to it's excellent features (the ability to create a NAS drive by connecting an external hard drive to it was especially good seeing as my NAS box just died!).

Setup was far easier then I expected! I remember back when setting these up was a massive pain! took so much configuration just to get them to work, but not this! plugged in connected it to the modem, configured the wifi and boom I was away!

Signal improved all over the house and it now covers every room! signal strength at worst is one off top all over the house and I haven't had a single drop out and the doorbell now works perfectly. All in all a very happy customer!

Great when it's working

This review applies to the ASUS RT-68u AC1900 router.

We've had three of these. Great interface and features. Easy to set up.

The first one died after a year. We used to turn it off every night because it gets rather warm. We then left it on 24/7 and downloaded the latest firmware. That's when it started playing up, dropping the internet, and overheating.

Amazon replaced this one for us - three year warranty.

The second one worked great for two weeks on the latest firmware and then started dropping the internet connection.

Amazon replaced it for us.

The third one worked great for about an hour on the latest firmware then started overheating and dropping the internet and serving out of range ip addresses.

This was sent back for a refund.

My partner works in IT and suspects there is a problem with the latest firmware updates.

We swapped out with a BT hub6 we had lying around and it worked just fine.

Just for info we were using a MT992 modem on the BT Ultrafast system.

We subsequently tries a Netgear R7000p which failed after 24 hours.

Currently we have the ASUS 86U and although we don't use the advanced features it is running faultlessly as I write, cool to touch and on the latest firmware.

Great service from Amazon.

3/31/2019

- New firmware 3.0.0.4.384_5977. Haven't had chance to use for too long yet but issue with device list has been fixed, and it seems now I can just restart Node without restarting router then node in the specific order. Still no second 5GHz band usable to Smart Connect.

- Added Advanced feature section as I got to use some of those features.

3/13/2019

- Update second 5G band direct connection section (only connects to router but not node).

- Update Setup section, as for me reboot router and node order makes difference.

- Added Router/Node switch Section

2/26/2019

- After 3 weeks of experience,

o Update AiMesh and stability sections, now up from 3 stars to 4 stars features. See detail in corresponding sections.

o Discovered that second 5GHz band can be used as separate SSID in AiMesh mode. (forced dual band section)

o ASUS support very disappointing.

o Simplified conclusion

********* ********* *********

Outside of the price, the specs on this router is currently unbeatable. Just to list a few amazing features that this router offers:

1. Wifi 6 support

2. AiMesh feature

3. VPN Fusion feature

4. Extensive customization options

5. Gamer’s optimization (I cannot comment on this feature as I do not use this feature).

********* ★★★★★ Features *********

+++++ Speed +++++

The router performance is great. In proximity to the router, I can get 500-600 Mbps Wifi internet download speed with 2016 Macbook Pro as well as Ipad Mini 4 on my 1Gbps service. Even at distance when connected to 5GHz band, I can get upper 300’s Mbps download at least 30 ft away from the router.

+++++ Range +++++

Our 3800 sqft two story house needed 3 Orbi Mesh system or 3 Eero Pro system to cover end to end with adequate speed. A single GT-AX11000 covers most of our home except one end of the basement, likely due to concrete wall.

To put into the objective number, Orbi was fast and I could get 200+ Mbps Wifi download speed throughout my home, but very unstable. So I moved onto Eero. Eero got very stable system without a hiccup, running for months, but there were areas where my speed went down to 80's or even lower Mbps for download. A single GT-AX11000 can get me 200+ Mbps throughout the house where the signal is reachable as long as connected to 5GHz band.

With AiMesh, most part of house I get 300+ Mbps and the worst area where I have no AiMesh Node, I still get 200+ Mbps. Though AiMesh to other Mesh network system I had are not directly compared here because I only got 1Gbps service recently and previously had only 400 Mbps service and also I did not have Ethernet back-haul option before. Nonetheless, I’m happy with coverage.

+++++ Advanced Features +++++

Although there are many features that I do not use or don't know how to use, lately as I set up more smart home device/home automation system, I've been impressed by what this router offers as otherwise, it could have got a bit more work.

1) Static IP: Ax11000 allows single toggle button to each of its connected devices to get Static IP, which is based on MAC address of the device and handled by router side, so even after reboot of the router, this feature remains. If needed, even laptop/tablet can use this so going out of network and back is hand-free.

2) VPN Server: Fairly readily set up to remotely log into home network.

3) Free DDNS: This is run by ASUS and let you point to your home network router by NAME.asuscomm.com. This allows remote accessing of home devices easy as we do not have to worry about ISP changing your IP address and reconfigure VPN access etc.

********* ★★★★☆ Features *********

+++++ WIFI 6 support +++++

This is certainly one of the main reasons to choose this router. The potential gain of WIFI 6 (802.11ax) standard is huge including speed boost, battery saving, and more simultaneous device connection. However, in order to see these benefits, supporting client device is needed. Recently, Samsung announced their latest phones to feature these, but I currently don’t own any client device. Also, Ax standard is still a draft version, so final version may have additional features that this router may not support (who knows). Basically, this is the future proof but not yet testable at the time.

+++++ Setup +++++

As a standalone router, set up was easy. As an AiMesh system, the initial set up was also easy enough. However, once I change some parameters, the router goes offline and I must reboot the router and node manually. These should be automatic. Also, in my case default setting of AiMesh did not work so well.

[3/13/2019] As part of other home network change/upgrade, I occasionally need to turn of Mesh Node. But when I do so, in order to get solid network back, I have to restart router first and wait until it is fully up, then turn Mesh Node on. Otherwise, system acts up.

+++++ AiMesh +++++

This is another major reason why I chose this router. AiMesh feature allows ASUS routers to act as true Mesh system. Advanced users can potentially implement Mesh like system using Access Point and/or Repeater mode of routers, but this requires lots of tuning like selecting proper Channel to avoid conflict, selection of Roaming parameters etc. Dedicated mesh system is simple but lacks customization option. AiMesh allows us to buy new and the latest, feature rich router and turn that into new router then use older routers to be satellite node to cover better range of house. This is a brilliant concept. For this reason, I have purchased two ROG GT-AX11000 routers.

Initially by default setting, I had constant drop out of AiMesh node (satellite). This was fixed by making node into Ethernet mode where default setting was AUTO mode. The latter mode supposed to automatically choose the best connection either Wireless or Ethernet backhaul. In my case, I found out it tried to switch to Wireless but signal was too weak (as I intentionally placed in the area with weak signal), and then disconnects and instead of reconnecting to Ethernet, node went offline. Ever since the change, not a single event of node drop.

+-+-+- Stability +-+-+-

I have HEOS speaker network system. Originally when I got HEOS speakers, I thought it was the HEOS that was faulty system as some speakers kept disappearing from the App device list. But later I found out, it was the Orbi mesh network issue. This is because after switching to Eero mesh network, I had never had this issue once again.

After fixing AiMesh node into Ethernet backhaul mode, this got better; however, I still experienced occasional sudden, device not connected to internet. After doing online research, I eventually changed setting to disable MU-MIMO, universal beamforming and airtime fairness options on both 5GHz and 2.4 GHz bands, and also enabled quality of service in media/internet surf mode. Ever since these changes, the Wifi went rock solid without any drop out. I had 7 solid days without a single reboot. As I do other home network upgrading, I have to turn them off every once and awhile. So mid-term stability is rock solid with appropriate setting, but figuring these on my own were not easy, and I don’t expect everyone get as lucky.

********* ★★★☆☆ Features *********

+-+-+- Many customization options +-+-+-

Stand-alone router system has advantage over Mesh system for more sophisticated customization options to the advanced users. AX11000 has nothing short in terms of these options. This is great for advanced users, but for trouble shooting, too many options make impossible to figure out exactly what’s causing the problem. I think ASUS should make default setup so network stability is the highest priority then let user play around to get more optimized, faster speed.

+-+-+- AiMesh Forced Dual Band +-+-+-

In tri-band systems, AiMesh uses second 5GHz band for dedicated Wireless back-haul. This makes sense as keeping solid connection between the router and node is crucial in mesh network system, and Mesh system like Orbi uses this technology as well. However, what does not make sense is when I have the connection set to Ethernet mode (not AUTO), I see no reason to keep blocking the band. Basically, the router and node are now appears as dual-band system, which we can buy for cheaper price. There is a rumor on Internet forum, this may be reverted in future firmware update.

[3/13/2019] It turned out the second 5GHz band is usable by disabling hidden SSID option. If you try to change the name to match Smart Connect SSID, you get an error though. Also, this band is only accessible on main router and not on Mesh Node.

+-+-+- Router/Node switch +-+-+-

In an ideal world, transition from router to node connection should be smooth and user shouldn’t even notice when the switch happened. In my case, this is a mixed experience. Sometimes device sticks to the original router or node despite the other is closer and even experienced a complete device disconnect when transition is happening. This sensitivity; however, is configurable by user in AiMesh. One need to change RSSI setting. I changed mine and it seemed to work better. However, I wish ASUS implement something so that RSSI value is automatically adjusted based on day to day statistics or at least suggest user to change RSSI values. This is probably one of the most important parameter to adjust to get optimal Mesh experience.

********* ★★☆☆☆ Features *********

----- VPN Fusion -----

Another great feature on paper by ASUS. This feature allows individual device to go through specific VPN service using a single router/network. Previously, I had my old router set up to connect to VPN and devices that I want to connect to the VPN had to switch to the router.

This feature can be a 3 stars because I was able to get this working with some VPN service such as Express VPN, but not others. However, those that do not work on this router works on ASUS Merlin firmware installed another router, so I believe it is not VPN server side issue. Basically, I see VPN connected on both server side and router menu; however, internet becomes inaccessible. To make it even worse, it affects entire network rather than just the device I associate with the VPN. Since this is one of the feature ASUS advertise, and I see as relatively unique to only some of ASUS routers, I hope to see this fixed.

----- Devices disappearing from Network List -----

[Update 3/31/2019] Firmware 3.0.0.4.384_5977 has resolved this issue.

----- AiMesh Node not configurable -----

It makes sense for some features to be non-selectable/configurable on AiMesh node as the purpose of mesh system is to make one change and reflect to all as a whole system. However, some feature like “light” on node should be individually configurable.

----- Aesthetics -----

It looks like a giant spider.

----- ASUS Customer Service -----

I have submitted my issues on the Ax11000 soon after I received the first router. ASUS occasionally sent me email saying they are still working on then referring to special tech, which sounded a good customer care. However, they were all templated e-mails and most likely just to buy a time. After 3 weeks of wait, the response was very disappointing without any content that’s useful.

********* ALTERNATIVE CONSIDERATIONS *********

The main reason to choose this router is its WIFI 6 support. Currently, there are relatively limited options for WIFI 6 compatible routers, but many more are on its way. So why did I choose this over the other options? Noteworthy alternatives are ASUS AX88U, Netgear RAX120 and TP Link Archer AX11000.

Vs. ASUS Ax88U

Ax88U is cheaper and also supports AiMesh. But it's a dual band, lacks VPN fusion feature and theoretical speed rating is 6000. So technically, ROG Ax11000 is better in all the specs. However, when used in AiMesh with Ethernet back-haul, I am losing a band anyways with current firmware, so Ax88U is likely to give the same performance with cheaper price.

Vs. TP Link Archer AX11000

This router also has 11000 speed rating. Furthermore, TP Link announced AiMesh equivalent OneMesh feature. Up on reviewing online, I just saw ASUS router gets higher rating in general and longer support from the company. But prior to current purchase, I've never had ASUS or TP Link router, so I just went with what I read. Also another feature I wanted was VPN Fusion but TP Link had no mention about this type of technology.

Vs. Netgear RAX120

Out of all system, I think this was the biggest alternative option for me. RAX120 has multigig LAN ports up to 5Gbps whereas, ROG GT-Ax11000 only has one 2.5 Gbps LAN port. However, RAX120 is 6000 speed rated with dual band. Netgear does not have direct competitor technology of AiMesh but has Orbi like Extenders with Ethernet back-haul option, but I felt conceptually AiMesh sounded better with more flexibility. For instance, if times comes and I really need 5Gbps or even 10Gbps LAN port, I can purchase next generation ASUS router with such feature and use both AX11000 as AiMesh node.

Vs. Other AX Mesh systems

Orbi, TP Link, and Arris will have Wifi 6 Mesh systems this year. I like and need Mesh system at home, but if we can get the Mesh functionality with more option/flexibility why would I choose more restrictive system? (Other than simplicity).

********* Conclusion *********

On paper, ROG Ax11000 is undoubtedly the best router on the market including what's coming in near future. As a single router, this deserved 5 stars for sure.

In AiMesh mode, I had originally struggled due to network stability issue. I was lucky enough to solve this on my own with internet search; however, ASUS tech support was no help. I would have returned the devices if I couldn’t have solved the issue. Since default setting did not work smoothly, I expect there will be others having the same or some different issues, and may consider this device may be unusable in AiMesh mode. So I’d give 4 stars for AiMesh setting because set up can be very tricky but once one figures out, it works better than other Mesh system I owned in the past.

In the future, I hope VPN Fusion feature to be fully functional, third band to be optionally opens up in AiMesh mode and node to be configurable at least to some extent.

Ageing hardware but still competitive performance and AiMesh is attractive solution

Very reliable bit of kit - bought this as a D-Link access point was failing and Asus have done an overhaul of the firmware and made it capable of supporting a Mesh set up. So a simple automatic upgrade of the firmware on my original router and then the new one also needed an upgrade. That was a bit harder and in the end it dawned on me I needed to keep the old kit off the network as Asus in their wisdom were doing some redirection and it kept kicking me out and trying to sign me into the original router during the initial setup. So I downloaded the up to date AiMesh firmware and uploaded it from a PC with a bit of old fashioned wire switching jiggery-pokery.

Then a factory reset (takes a few minutes to get to the power and 2 wifi lights to come on) and waited for the magic... and another factory reset and waited for the magic... and then third time lucky I got it to join the main router as a mesh access point, it required no other intervention, all the setup was done with a couple of clicks on the router.

Given I had a bit of trouble, the docs from the website don't tell you what happens. You click the AiMesh and select Search from the dialog that appears on the right. If all is well, your new AiMesh device appears, which it did every time I tried. What didn't work for me was clicking on the box to get to add it. I tried lots of clicks the first two times and nothing apparently happened. Third time I got a "Do you want to add" popup which then I confirmed and there was an obvious percentage counter on the box which indicated the adding process which took a few minutes. I suspect my clicking quality was substandard by Asus standards!

Mixed success in positioning it as a straight mesh access point, so resorted to going back to the original location of the failed AP and used a gigabyte supporting hardwired link between the two points. To work as a mesh it clearly needed a 4 out of 4 bar signal to get the AiMesh to perform, which I couldn't get with a couple of walls and floor in between my two apparently desirable points near the middle of the house. Chromecast barely worked even with less than 5 metres and a single wall, yet once I moved the access point to a clear air position on one side of the house and linked with cable, signal around the house was brilliant, so I think that the chatting between the two AC68Us was critical to performance, to the extent that a wifi HD camera at the far end of the house got perfect throughput when I was struggling with the central position under the stairs trying to use straight wifi connection between the two 68Us.

I renamed the SSIDs to all be the same to see how I got on (both 5G and 2.4G channels), and with AiMesh the AP SSIDs are simply copied from the main router. Some devices happily migrated to the right access point, a couple of others needed a nudge. Note that although mesh networks are advertised suggesting that by magic your devices will attach to the best signal, the reality is that unless the signal is poor, any client will sit on an adequate signal even if there is an excellent signal sitting there wanting to be adopted. A quick flight mode or wi-fi off and on might be required to get onto the right access point - it will not magically change as you wander from room to room. Anyway, did a couple of speed tests and was getting 140Mbps downloads around the house from my 200Mbps Virgin line on my Samsung S6.
